What PSC officers look for
- Fire drill not carried out at the required frequency, or poorly done
- Crew don't know their muster duties
- Drill records don't match what PSC observes during a drill
- Equipment not used realistically during drills
Typical root causes
- Drills done as paperwork only
- High crew turnover without familiarisation
- Drill scenarios repeated without variation
Corrective action (example)
Carry out a full fire drill under supervision, including realistic use of equipment; debrief and record lessons learned.
Preventive action (example)
Set a varied annual drill scenario plan; master reviews drill quality; superintendent observes a drill on the next visit.
Evidence to attach for close-out
